When I interview, I feel like I’m terrible. Trying to give the right answer when I really want to give a completely different answer. How to balance being myself with saying what I know they want to hear? Feels impossible.

You’re probably not as bad as you think and I don’t think you should try to fit a square peg in a round hole. If you’re not comfortable in the interview, maybe you haven’t found the right fit yet?
when i have an interview, i write the questions i think they will ask, i write my response. read it until i feel comfortable then i practice having the interview with a friend to try and make it feel more natural so when the real interview comes you can just pretend you’re still talking to your friend or whoever helped you. you can also google some good answers to the questions that seem they don’t have a clear cut answer like why should we hire you? what makes you a good candidate? look for examples and then make it about you, why would they want you, why would you be a good fit? also what helps me is even though i am so anxious about it, pretend to be confident. even if you aren’t, you can put on a show and it will slowly start to become the new you. the more confident version.
gonna take ur advice mistycloudsunset, thank you!
I would agree, thank you for these tips…I love the pretend I’m confident part! GREAT advice, and thank you for sharing your wisdom…. It is always great to learn something new on here, and to be able to say what’s really going on. @Iwannarock, I just want to commend you and applaud you for the fact that you struggle with what to say. That alone says you’re a good person , that you care and that it matters to you. It might feel impossible, but I always believe that things will find a way of unfolding , and you will land the right one by just being your authentic self… I hear you in the idea that it is so easy to over think what the right answer will be, and that it would elude you if it seemed too simple and straightforward. With the whole AI , and chat gpt thing, I am sure they are just trying to see if you are actually saying things from experience or if you just google/ chat gpt it and regurgitated it for them .. crazy how interviews have changed so much in such a short time…
good luck , and I am rooting for you!
